Asphalt Shingle Roofing in Artesia With Every Layer Shown to You

We install and repair asphalt shingle roofs, and we photograph each layer as it goes on: the bare deck, the underlayment, the flashing and the finished ridge. You see the parts of your roof that matter most before they're covered for good.

A Shingle Roof Is Only as Good as What's Under It

Asphalt shingles cover more homes in Southern California than any other roofing. They're lighter than tile, cost less to install and come in dozens of colors. A good architectural shingle holds up well through long, dry summers when the attic below it can breathe.

Shingles are usually the right call when your current shingle roof is worn out, or when a heavy tile roof isn't an option for your home's framing. If only a few shingles are damaged, our roof repair page may be the better place to start. Still deciding on material? We're happy to compare shingles with tile roofing on your own roof.

Most of what makes a shingle roof last is hidden once the job is done. Nail placement, deck condition and flashing all vanish under the shingles. That's why we take photos at each stage and share them with you.

What a New Shingle Roof Includes

  1. 01

    Stripping to bare wood

Old shingles and underlayment come off so the wood below is in plain view. You get photos of the exposed deck before anything new is laid.

  2. 02

    Fixing the deck where needed

We replace sheathing that is soft, stained or separating, usually along the eaves and near old leaks. On older roofs with gapped plank decking, we show you what turned up and how we repaired it.

  3. 03

    Underlayment and drip edge

Synthetic underlayment covers the entire deck, and metal drip edge runs along the eaves and rakes. This layer is what stops water if a shingle ever lifts.

  4. 04

    All-new flashing

New step flashing goes in where roof meets wall, along with new pipe boots and valley metal. Bent or rusted flashing often causes early shingle leaks, so we replace it instead of working around it.

  5. 05

    Attic airflow

Hot air stuck in the attic cooks shingles from underneath. We look at the eave intake and ridge exhaust and suggest changes only if airflow truly falls short.

  6. 06

    Cleanup and your photo record

We roll a magnet over the lawn, planters and driveway to pick up loose nails before leaving. The old roofing goes in our truck, not your trash bins, and you receive the finished photos alongside the before photos.

Signs Your Shingles Are Wearing Out

  • Grit collecting in the gutters

The mineral coating on top of a shingle loosens and washes off over the years. When your gutters fill with something that looks like coarse sand, the asphalt below is starting to sit bare in the sun.

  • Curling or cupping

Shingle edges that turn up or corners that curl have lost their flexibility. They catch wind easily and won't lie flat again.

  • Missing or creased tabs after wind

Strong Santa Ana gusts can break the seal strip and fold shingles back. A creased shingle often cracks along that line and lets water reach the underlayment.

  • Ceiling stains after the first rain

Months of dry weather can hide a problem until the first winter storm. A new brown ring on the ceiling means water has already made it past the shingles and the deck.

  • Patches on patches

If your roof has several mismatched repairs and keeps needing more, the shingles around them are likely near the end of their life too.

Steps in a Shingle Roof Job

  1. 1

    A free inspection with photos

We go over the roof, check the attic when there's access and photograph what we find. You see the very pictures our recommendation rests on.

  2. 2

    Your estimate and selections

Your free written estimate breaks out tear-off, an allowance for deck repair, underlayment, flashing and ventilation. We bring shingle samples so you can pick a color in daylight beside your home.

  3. 3

    Permit and start date

We pull the reroofing permit and set a start date with you. Certain reroofs must meet California's energy code rule for cool-rated shingles, and we let you know early if that applies to yours.

  4. 4

    On the roof

Tarps go over plants and along the walls before removal begins. We only strip what we can cover with underlayment the same day, so the roof is never left open overnight, and we photograph the deck, flashing and nailing as we go.

  5. 5

    Walking it with you

When the city inspection passes, we walk the finished roof and the yard with you and hand over the complete photo record.

What Sets the Price of a Shingle Roof

Two homes the same size can get very different prices, mostly because of what's hiding under the old shingles. Your written estimate lists each part separately so nothing surprises you. Financing is available through Service Finance Company, subject to credit approval.

Size and pitch
A larger roof takes more bundles, more underlayment and more labor. Steep pitches slow things down and need harness anchors and roof jacks set up before removal begins.
An older layer below
Some houses got new shingles nailed over the original ones years ago. Taking off both layers means more time up top and more debris to haul away.
State of the deck
Soft or damaged sheathing adds cost, and the amount can't be known until the old roof is off. Every sheet we replace gets photographed so you can see why.
Shingle choice and roof features
Architectural shingles cost more than basic 3-tab, and cool-rated lines carry their own pricing. Each chimney, skylight, valley and added vent means more flashing work.

Common Questions About Shingle Roofs

Can the new shingles go on top of the old ones?

Code sometimes allows it, but we usually recommend removing everything. A second layer hides the deck, so soft wood or old leak damage stays out of sight. A full tear-off lets us show you what's really there and fix it.

How many days does the work take?

Most single-family homes take roughly a couple of working days once materials are on site, and larger or steeper roofs take more. Deck repairs found during removal can add time. The planned schedule is in your estimate, and we keep you posted each day.

Architectural or 3-tab: which should I pick?

Architectural shingles are thicker, have more depth to their look and usually handle wind better. Basic 3-tab is cheaper and suits a tighter budget. We bring both to the inspection and explain how each would perform on your roof.

Can insurance cover part of a new shingle roof?

If wind or another covered event caused the damage, insurance may pay part of the cost. We work directly with your insurance claim and provide our damage photos, but the adjuster makes the coverage call. Ordinary wear usually isn't included.

Does someone need to be home during the work?

Not all day, but we'd like someone there at the start and for the final walk-through. Please move cars off the driveway and bring breakable items in from the patio. We'll call with updates and show you what got done each day.
